About Candle Times

Candle Times shows when to light Shabbat and holiday candles, and when Shabbat ends, for the place you are standing in. The times are not read from a fixed list of cities. Your phone gives the site its coordinates, and sunset is calculated for that exact point, so two neighborhoods of the same city can differ by a minute, and a traveler gets the times for where they are right now. It is free, needs no sign up, and if you prefer a particular city, each of the more than 300 cities on the list has a full year calendar page.

Guides

Frequently asked questions

How does the site know when to light?

It calculates sunset from the latitude and longitude of your place and subtracts 18 minutes. If your phone does not share a location, the site offers the city that matches your time zone, and you can pick another city by hand.

Why 40 minutes in Jerusalem?

It is the accepted custom in Jerusalem, so the site shows 40 minutes there. Everywhere else the default is 18 minutes, and the live board lets you choose 20 or 40 to match your own custom.

When does Shabbat end?

Shabbat ends when the sun is 8.5 degrees below the horizon, worked out for each place and each week. In a northern European summer that is much later than in Israel.

Does the site store my location?

Not for the calculation. If you allow location access, the coordinates are used inside your browser only. Details are on the privacy page.

Can I see another city, or the weeks ahead?

Yes. Pick another place at the top of the screen, and each city page carries a full year of times, holidays included.
