About Ner, Shabbat candle lighting times
Ner is a free site that shows when to light Shabbat candles, when Shabbat ends and how to make Havdalah, anywhere in the world.
Who built the site
The site was built by Itzik Cohen, known on social media as Aba Itzik (abaitzik.com). Itzik is a cancer survivor, and along the way he received support, prayers and warmth from many people across the Jewish world. He wanted to give something back to the Jewish people for all he was given, and this site is his gift: a simple, free tool that helps every Jew know when to light candles.
What the site offers
- Completely free, with no sign up and no password.
- Candle lighting, end of Shabbat and Rabbeinu Tam times, plus festival times, for your location.
- Blessings for lighting and Havdalah in Hebrew, with transliteration and translation in 15 languages.
- A page for each of the 305 cities in Israel and around the world.
- A countdown, a reminder and the option to add it to your home screen.
How the times are checked
The calculation uses the hebcal calculation engine, and we compare the results against hebcal.com for different cities and dates across a full year. The default is candle lighting 18 minutes before sunset and the end of Shabbat at 8.5 degrees below the horizon, and you can change the number of minutes. Our guides explain the methods. Still, none of this replaces asking a rabbi.
